Christmas 2014

Christmas season this year was filled with all the usual holiday trappings, including fun family events, sugary treats, sparkling lights, and even a few viral infections.

We started off the season by adventuring to the mountains to cut our first tree as a family.  DeNae was our guide and hot cocoa provider. I really enjoyed the tree we choose, it fit just perfectly in our home.  Dennison also insisted on having his own "tree" which he put in his room and decorated with all his own ornaments.

We also spent a family night decorating the gingerbread house from the kit that Nana and Papa gave us.

What holiday season wouldn't be complete with out silly Christmas songs sung(more like shouted) by preschoolers. Sam's school had a fun little holiday program and party complete with a special visit from Santa and cookies and hot chocolate.

The culminating event of the season, was the Baxter Family gathering.  The Baxter side has not been all together for several year, and this year we all descended to the Cameron residence in Fort Collins.  There was a crew that drove 20 hours from Kentucky in a mini-van(, including 3 kids in car seats, and Grandpa laid out on the floor with a herniated disc.  Another couple of college girls ventured from Idaho and Utah, while the crew from Las Vegas hopped on a plane.  All-in-all there were 2 babies, 6 little kids, and 12 adults that cozied up to spend the holidays together (We were only missing Emma on her mission and Jesse, who just started a new job in LA).  The picture below about sums it up.  We had some great times, but there was also a terrible stomach bug that made the rounds, and then made the rounds again.  It took out everyone but 4 adults and one baby. In addition to gastroenteritis, there was also the laryngitis and the flu.  Needless to say, there was a lot of people not feeling well at any given time, in this shot, DeNae is feeling pretty terrible but still puts up a good effort to entertain the kids. We did have plenty of good times though that should not be forgotten, so here are some of the highlights.

Simon got to meet Grandpa for the first time and made sure to get lots of love from Grandma and everyone else.

We went out to see some very clever holiday lights at a garden in Ft. Collins.  It was freezing cold, but the lights were really cool with a garden theme.  There were trellises of grapes, a field of corn, carrots, chili peppers, and a flower garden complete with butterflies. to name a few. It was a refreshing take on holiday lights that was different then the usual reindeer and candy canes.

The kids took full advantage of the opportunity to load up on sugar with some cookie "decorating" (and sampling).

I love how focused my nephew was at putting so much frosting on this cookie before smashing another one on top of it.

On Christmas morning, Grandma was trying to contain all the grand kids before the rushed upstairs to see what Santa left. She did pretty well fending all of them off. (This lady has some experience raising 8 kids of her own)

Some Christmas morning chaos. We also had a gift exchange for the adults where the most coveted gifts were the "bacon wave," and a hand crafted cutting board made by my brother-in-law, Jason.

The "white" part of Christmas was delayed until the afternoon when it dumped a bunch of snow. Deep snow is a novely to those from Las Vegas and KY, we made sure to get out and play.

With this many little kids (most of them boys) cooped up in a small area for long periods of time, there was a constant din of running, yelling, and rough housing.  Aunt DeNae and Uncle Brendon's gift of glow sticks, mixed with some loud music DJ'd by Eve, just aligned all the wild crazy movement into a fun light show that kept everyone a laughing (of course until someone started crying).

This may have been a first of its kind when Grandpa actually played video games.  Samuel and Dennison had a riot boxing with Opa.

These two cuties are 3 weeks apart and are on complete opposite ends of the grown chart, but they are so cute!

A little snow and frigid temperature didn't stop Opa from building Estes rockets with kids and launching them. I didn't get any pictures of the launch because it was Ada's turn to be sick that day.  The boys were very excited.

This adorable guy is Homer (3 months older than Simon).  He is like the cute baby version of Sloth from goonies.  Squeezing this little one was irresistible.

Audrey and I took the three oldest kids to the discovery science museum to explore one afternoon. They had lots of fun  with the tornado wind tunnel, playing with lights and a shadow wall, learning to play instruments, building ball tracks, ordering food in diner slang, and lots of other fun things.

Periodically we would take the kids over the the church gym to let them run around and get some of their crazies out while the sick people back at the house could get some rest.  This was the last day when we were having a picnic on the floor.

After all the relatives came, and went, we headed home for the rest of the holiday break to enjoy our new toys and some some time together.

Sam and Dennison playing a new game from Nana and Papa.

They wanted to have a slumber party every night, and we consented.  Here they are both on the top bunk and you can see all the stuff pushed off to the sides like books, ipod with headphones, a perplexus game, and who knows what else.

Another holiday season passes, and this one will sure to be remembered. We may always remember the never ending string of lowlights, like barfing, pooping, fevers, freezing cold trailers, deep snow, dirty dishes, piles of shoes, noisy chaos, fighting, or fender benders, but hopefully we we also relish the laughs, jokes, delicious food and good company.

Sam is Five!

Happy Birthday Samuel! This boy is such a great kid.  He is so helpful with his younger siblings and especially loves to cuddle Simon.  He often  surprises me by doing helpful things without being asked.  One evening he put away his brother's scooter and brought in everyone's shoes from by the trampoline with out being asked (this is pretty big for a kid his age to observe then help, without any prompting). He is my little chef in training, and is the first to volunteer to help me cook something in the kitchen, and is always putting new "combos" together.  He LOVES to build blanket forts and create projects by cutting, gluing and taping anything he can find in the recycling bin.  If he's not inside, I can usually find him barefoot outside digging in the dirt, even in the middle of winter. Sam looks up to his big brother and seems to be enthusiastic about whatever Dennison is into at the moment, be it Angry Birds, Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Lego.   He is a deep thinker and frequently stumps us with his questions and philosophical observations, on the downside he likes to argue and often gets the response "because I said so" when he backs us into a corner.  Every night Sam likes to listen to primary songs to help him fall asleep.

This year we spent the day up in Fort Collins cutting a Christmas tree then celebrating at DeNae's house.

The velcro darts were a hit, until they got stuck in Ada's hair.

This years request was an angry bird cupcake pull apart cake.

We Love you Sammy Bear, you are growing up way to fast!

Thanksgiving 2014

For thanksgiving this year, we took a long overdue trip back to Utah to visit family.  The road trip there, was definitely interesting.  After getting delayed a couple of hours due to snow and traffic coming over the passes, we thought maybe getting off the interstate might yield some time saving results.  That decision led us in smack into the middle of a massive sheep herding operation.  This historic drive occurs annually right along the highway, there were thousands of sheep, and we just had to drive right through them, and they were in no hurry to move out of the way.  It was hilarious when Ada asked a little nervously, "Sheep not eat me, right?" Eventually we did make it through and were finally on our way.

On long road trips I always enjoyed napping in the car.  Sam, however,  was the only one to nod off the entire trip though, and only for about 30 min.

Our first stop was Papa and Nana's new place in Midway.  It's a beautiful home, and we were able to get in some much needed quiet family time before the next several days of craziness. Some recent snow covering the mountains was especially picturesque.  We made sure to take advantage of all the amenities including a clubhouse with, foosball, arcade games, pool, and basketball.  There was also an indoor swimming pool Ada and Dennison and I went swimming in as well. Sam was recovering from a stomach bug and Mike was working on a plumbing emergency.

Eventually Eve, Abby and Eve's friend met up with us to spend a little time together, mostly spent goofing around and rough housing.

Then we packed up the car (we were so squished with every seat taken, as well as all of our stuff and all of the girls luggage) and headed down the canyon for a whirlwind of visits with extended family. I think we got out and back in at least seven different times, which is a huge endeavor when there is no room and you need to get kids in and out of car seats.

First stop, Grandma and Grandpa Bingham, where we had some of  famous clam chowder and  sneaked into the thanksgiving pie a day early.

Then we headed over to see Aunt Mary, Simon made sure he got lots of attentions. After Mary's we made a quick stop at grandpa Baxter's.

Then we were off to meet up with Abby for dinner at our favorite ol' hamburger joint B & D's to enjoy a pastrami burger with pumpkin pie shakes.  Then we went to Abby's place for a visit. It's always interesting to see how creative you can get to entertain kids in places that don't ever host children.  Abby was pretty successful keeping them entertained with her medical supplies and tools.

After one last stop at the grocery store (the night before thanksgiving nonetheless) we eventually made it to Bountiful to spend time with Mike's family. First on the agenda, Kickball!  We had a lot of fun playing with everyone thanksgiving morning before we stuffed ourselves full of turkey. Below are just some pictures of everyone enjoying the day together.

Ada made sure to round up a following of admirers.

Dennison was super enthusiastic about Theo teaching him how to play chess at Aunt Mary's, so he enlisted his cousins to challenge him.

Just lounging around.

The next day everyone met up for some ice skating.  Dennison did really well.  This picture cracks me up, because he put his hands on his hips making it very clear he did not need the little stand to skate. It was so nice the the kids jumped right back in with their cousins to have fun.

Nana wanted a picture of all 18 grandchildren ages 3 mo.-14 yrs.  It was pretty  entertaining to watch.

The last day we squished in one last adventure before we hit the road, and took a nice little hike up by the Rahden's to enjoy so cool autumn air and let the kids run round before sitting in the car all day.

And we can't forget the early birthday gifts from Nana and Papa for Samuel.

It felt like we packed in so much in just a few days, but it was well worth it to spend time with family. Happy Thanksgiving!
